July 3, 2025 | California, USA — Lyten Inc., a California-based lithium-sulfur battery innovator, announced its acquisition of Northvolt’s 6GWh lithium-ion factory near Gdańsk, Poland. This strategic move strengthens Lyten’s presence in the European battery market and accelerates its plans for large-scale production of advanced lithium-sulfur cells.

The plant was originally developed by Swedish battery maker Northvolt to support the booming European electric vehicle (EV) and energy storage sectors. Lyten plans to retrofit the factory to produce its proprietary lithium-sulfur batteries, which offer higher energy density and cost advantages over conventional lithium-ion technology.

Michael O’Kane, CEO of Lyten, said, “This acquisition marks a pivotal step for Lyten to scale its breakthrough battery technology in Europe and better serve automotive OEMs and energy storage customers”.

Northvolt welcomed the agreement as it realigns its focus on core projects in Sweden and Germany amid market challenges.

Industry experts view Lyten’s expansion as part of a broader trend where US battery innovators establish manufacturing in Europe to capitalize on rising EV demand and tightening emissions regulations.

Lyten currently pilots lithium-sulfur cell production in the US, targeting commercial output by 2026. The Polish factory will be instrumental in meeting European market needs and boosting global competitiveness.
