May 21, 2025 | Madrid — BYD Energy Storage has announced a significant expansion of its partnership with Spanish renewable energy developer Grenergy. The two companies have signed a new agreement to supply an additional 3 GWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) for the Oasis de Atacama project in northern Chile. This brings their total collaboration to 6.5 GWh, marking the largest energy storage supply deal in Latin America to date.
The Oasis de Atacama project is poised to become the world’s largest solar-plus-storage facility, combining 2 GW of photovoltaic generation with 11 GWh of energy storage capacity. Developed in seven phases, the project aims to produce approximately 5.5 TWh of clean energy annually, significantly contributing to Chile’s renewable energy goals.
Under the expanded agreement, BYD will supply its advanced MC Cube ESS containers, incorporating the company’s proprietary lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology. These systems are known for their high safety, long lifespan, and exceptional performance. Deliveries are scheduled to commence in the second quarter of 2025, with operations expected to begin later that year.
David Ruiz de Andrés, CEO of Grenergy, stated, “The extension of this strategic agreement with BYD marks a key milestone in our expansion plans, driving storage projects on an unprecedented scale. We continue to consolidate our vision of a more efficient and sustainable energy system with technology that responds to the current and future challenges of the sector.”
Yin Xiaoqiang, General Manager of BYD Energy Storage, added, “Our partnership with Grenergy exemplifies our shared commitment to innovation and sustainability. I am immensely proud of what we are achieving together. With a shared vision, we are set to redefine the landscape of energy storage and drive progress toward a greener tomorrow.”
The Oasis de Atacama project has already secured long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) for 75% of its energy output, ensuring a stable revenue stream and demonstrating strong market confidence in large-scale renewable energy initiatives.
As the demand for renewable energy and energy storage solutions continues to grow globally, the expanded collaboration between BYD and Grenergy underscores the critical role of strategic partnerships in advancing sustainable energy infrastructure.
