April 3, 2025 | Chile — ContourGlobal has successfully completed commissioning and launched operations of the Quillagua Solar-Storage Power Plant in Chile’s Antofagasta region. With an installed capacity of 221 MWp and a battery energy storage system (BESS) totaling 1.2 GWh, Quillagua stands as the largest solar-plus-storage project in Latin America to date.
Located in the Atacama Desert, the facility combines over 452,000 solar panels, 5,000 solar trackers, 44 transformer stations, and 90 inverters. The energy storage system is equipped with 267 units of BYD’s MC Cube modular solutions, providing scalable, high-efficiency battery performance. The project is designed to supply 200 MW of clean energy for up to 6.2 hours after sunset, enhancing the grid’s stability and supporting Chile’s renewable energy transition.
Quillagua is part of ContourGlobal’s broader renewable energy portfolio expansion in Chile, which also includes the Victor Jara solar and storage project in the Tarapacá region. Together, the two facilities deliver a combined solar capacity of 452 MWp and 2.5 GWh of energy storage.
“This achievement marks a major milestone for our company and for Chile’s energy sector,” ContourGlobal stated. “It demonstrates our commitment to delivering sustainable, reliable, and innovative energy solutions.”
Chile has set an ambitious target to have 70% of its power generation come from renewable sources by 2030. The successful commissioning of the Quillagua plant is a significant step toward achieving this goal, showcasing the country’s leadership in renewable energy adoption across Latin America.
ContourGlobal’s entry into the Chilean market with large-scale solar-plus-storage facilities reflects the growing importance of hybrid renewable projects in ensuring energy reliability while reducing carbon emissions.
